Janey Schmidt Lawrence Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Janey Schmidt Lawrence, by her parents, Henry and Emily Keidel Schmidt. Janey graduated from Fredericksburg High School where she played clarinet in band, was a majorette, and starred on the varsity basketball team. She graduated from Texas Christian University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. After teaching and coaching at Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio, she moved back to her hometown where she taught math and coached basketball at Fredericksburg High School. During the summer months, she gave swimming lessons to hundreds of children in her parents’ pool at the Ranch Motel. From her youngest swimmers to her high school athletes, students loved and respected her. Janey was passionate about her two horses and loved to ride with her father and her young son, Jeffrey. She was also a competitive bridge player and had weekly games with her sister, Barbara Schmidt Heinen, and friends. Smart and artistic, Janey valued education, organization and discipline.
